Recruiting Tips for Direct Sales

10 Steps to Effective Communication~

 1.    Believe in what you say.  -  Belief is power.  It’s hard to get excited when you doubt the process.  That is why it is so important to be doing what you are asking of others.  Your power to believe begins with the action you take on a daily basis.

2.    Believe in the people to whom you speak.  -  Always remember that you are working with people that decided to work with you. How they feel many times

determines their level of belief.  All great communicators have one thing in common; they expect a lot of their audience.  If you are going to reach people you have to believe in them.

3.    Live what you say. -  What you do speaks so loudly, I can’t hear what you are saying.  Your actions do speak louder than words.  Your credibility is determined by your own actions.  If you are not willing to do it – don’t ask others to.

4.    Know when to say it. -  In many cases, timing is everything.  If you don’t take it into account, many times you fail to reach the listener.  Remember there is really no constructive criticism.  The timing of the message is critical to the person receiving it.

5.    Know how to say it. -  Verbiage can often make the difference on how a message is received.  Put yourself in the receivers place and think carefully about wording.

6.    Know why to say it.  -   Many times we talk too much.  Always base your message on what you want your audience to do, rather than on what you want them to know. Then make sure to tell them what to

do next.  You would be surprised to know how many leaders expect their people to apply what they have learned without ever being asked to do it.

7.    Have fun saying it.  -   Don’t take yourself too seriously.   We are all cracked pots – and the bigger the cracks the more God’s light shines through.  Make your communication fun and relaxed.  And don’t be afraid to use humor!

8.    Show it as you say it.  -   As a leader it is your job to hold the vision for your people.  Learn to paint a picture as you speak to them individually or to a group.  Your listeners are more likely to respond when they can “see” what you are trying to tell them.

9.    Say it so people can own it. -  There is no reason for people to respond to a message that doesn’t seem to be directed at them.  To foster ownership in your listeners you must include them in your communication.  Speak specifically not hypothetically.  Tell stories and spell out how your message affects them personally.   If people know what is really at stake they respond at a much higher level of commitment.

10.  Say it so people will do it.  -  The bottom line for any communication is action.  So make sure that a call for action is part of any message you share.  Communicate the benefits for the person to follow-through.  Give them the steps they will need to respond.  And, finally make sure they are capable of doing what you are communicating that they do.

People skills and communication go hand in hand.  The leader who doesn’t effectively communicate will get minimal results.  Practice the art of communication daily.
