Recruiting Tips for Direct Sales

Five questions to size up potential leaders:
  1. Do they have growth potential?
  2. Do they have the ability to produce?
  3. Do they add value to the team?
  4. Do they positively influence other people?
  5. Do they train and raise up leaders?

Now if you don’t have a positive answer for any one or two of the items listed above – that’s ok, leaders have to develop over time.  You can’t be a leader overnight.  This does give you some things to work toward though, and that’s always a good thing.

There are many fabulous books available on becoming an effective leader and I encourage you to go out and read.  Learning should never end – even as a leader.  When you are at the point where you are ready to be a leader, you must take steps towards that each and every day.

Read 2 books every month on different subjects that deal with leadership, teamwork, read about other leaders, anything that will help to expand your mind. I also think you should listen to positive tapes everyday.

Some of our best authors today also have tape sets; maybe someone in your company has created some.  Find out and get them and listen to them.  I find the best time is when you are getting dressed for the day.  You can apply your makeup and listen to something positive.  Also make your car a college.  You spend so much time in the car today, put it to good use.  If you have kids, it will also be sending them positive messages that will influence their future.

Leadership

Find a mentor.  This doesn’t even have to be someone that you are in close contact with.  Leaders can mentor from afar.  This could be someone outside of your company or I highly recommend you find someone within your company that has the position you would like to grow into at some point in the future.  As you grow, you mentor may change.  But I promise you will never forget the lessons learned from each one.  Reading and listening to tapes are fabulous – but our strongest lessons can be learned by watching the process.  Embrace it.
